Besides its prominent role in brain development and plasticity [1], the polymeric glycan polysialic acid (polySia) emerges as a novel regulator of microglia and macrophage activity. We recently identified a pool of polySia-modified proteins in the Golgi compartment of murine microglia and human macrophages that is released in response to inflammatory stimulation [2]. Since exogenously added polySia is able to attenuate the inflammatory response we proposed that the release of polysialylated proteins provides negative feedback regulation of microglia and macrophage activation. In my presentation, I will discuss mechanisms of polySia release and sensing as well as first evidence for where and when this may come into play under neuropathological conditions in vivo, like traumatic brain injury or brain tumors such as glioblastoma.-Dr. Herbert Hildebrandt References: [1] Schnaar, Gerardy-Schahn & Hildebrandt (2014) Physiol Rev. 94:461-518 [2] Werneburg et al.
