Franco-Taiwanese Scientific Grand Prize to Shang-Te Danny Hsu of Institute of Biological Chemistry, Academia Sinica and Cyril Hanus of Institute of Psychiatry and Neuroscience of Paris, France.
The Académie des sciences - Institut de France and the National Science and Technology Council award a French-Taiwanese Scientific Grand Prize every year to a team of French and Taiwanese researchers for their contribution to scientific research of interest to both regions.
The 2024 Franco-Taiwanese prize is awarded jointly to Cyril HANUS, research fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neuroscience of Paris, and Shang-Te Danny HSU, research fellow and deputy director of the Institute of Biological Chemistry of the Academia Sinica in Taipei.
In early 2022, Cyril Hanus and Shang-Te Danny Hsu initiated a collaborative project focused on modelling glycoprotein structures. Leveraging advanced techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) to obtain key experimental data as inputs for computational modeling of atomic protein structures, they successfully developed GlycoSHIELD — a computational approach for creating atomistic models of glycosylated protein structures. This work is published in the journal “Cell” in February, 2024 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2024.01.034). The modelling of glycosylated structures, made possible by their collaborative efforts, holds significant potential for advancing our understanding of the functional importance of the glycan components of proteins involved in neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s diseases. Furthermore, their research extends to the structural analysis of the SARS-CoV Spike protein, offering crucial insights for the design of targeted antibodies and vaccines.
The Prize will be awarded during the solemn ceremony of the Académie des sciences in Paris on November 26th 2024. The following day, November 27th 2024, the laureates will present their research during an event co-organized by the Académie des sciences and the National Science and Technology Council, also in Paris.
