Description

Established in 2008, the Biophysics Core Facility (BCF) of Academia Sinica is located in Room 402 of the Institute of Biological Chemistry. It serves as a professional platform integrating multiple advanced biophysical analysis techniques. its mission is to support researchers in characterizing the properties and interactions of biomolecules through comprehensive services, including training courses, workshops, user certification, instrument reservation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

The facility is equipped with several state-of-the-art instruments, such as an analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC), two biolayer interferometry systems (BLI), a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), a differential scanning fluorimeter (nanoDSF), a dynamic light scattering system (DLS), an isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC), a mass photometer (MP) and two surface plasmon resonance systems (SPR).

These analytical tools enable the qualitative and quantitative study of biomolecules—including proteins, antibodies, carbohydrates, and DNA—by assessing their purity, stability, specificity, and aggregation states. Furthermore, the instruments provide detailed thermodynamic, kinetic, and structural information on molecular interactions, helping researchers elucidate interaction mechanisms, optimize production conditions, perform screening, and ensure quality control. Such insights are essential for both fundamental biochemical research and the development of protein-based and small-molecule therapeutics.
